What Is AEO and Why It's the Next Big Thing for Local Studios

July 1, 2026

Something is changing in how people find local businesses. Most studio owners haven't caught up yet.

A few years ago, the path to a new client was predictable. Someone searches "yoga studio near me," scans the results, clicks a link. You needed to show up in that list. That's SEO, and it's still important.

But more and more, people aren't scanning a list of links. They're asking.

They're typing full questions into ChatGPT. They're using Google's AI Overview. They're asking Siri to find a dance fitness class nearby. And these AI tools don't return ten links and let the user decide. They give one answer. Maybe two or three. Then they stop.

If your studio isn't one of them, you don't exist in that moment.

The Shift That's Already Happening

Search behavior is changing faster than most local businesses realize.

Google's AI Overview now appears at the top of many search results, synthesizing an answer before users ever see the traditional link list. ChatGPT has hundreds of millions of users, many of whom use it to find local recommendations. Apple Intelligence is built directly into the devices your potential clients carry everywhere.

These tools pull from what's already on the web: your website, your reviews, your Google Business Profile, and the structured data behind your pages. If that information is incomplete, unclear, or missing, the AI has nothing to work with. It recommends someone else.

Why Local Studios Are Particularly at Risk

When someone asks an AI tool for a recommendation, they're asking a natural-language question. Something like:

  • "What's a good barre studio near me?"
  • "Is there a yoga studio in Hingham with beginner classes?"
  • "Find me a women's strength training studio on the South Shore."

These are specific, local, intent-driven questions. The studios that get recommended are the ones whose digital presence clearly and completely answers them.

Most studio websites are not built that way. They're built to look good, not to be understood by machines. That gap is the opportunity, and it's widest right now, before most studios start paying attention to AEO.

What AEO Actually Requires

AEO is not a separate strategy bolted onto everything else. It's a layer of clarity built into the fundamentals.

Natural language copy. Your website should answer real questions in complete sentences, not just keyword-stuffed headers. "We offer beginner-friendly barre classes in Scituate, MA, for women of all fitness levels" is far more useful to an AI than a hero section that just says "BARRE | PILATES | FITNESS."

A complete, accurate Google Business Profile. AI tools pull heavily from GBP when answering local queries. Your category, description, hours, photos, and reviews all factor in. An incomplete profile is a missed signal.

FAQ content. Pages that directly answer the questions your potential clients are asking give AI tools exactly what they need. This is one of the fastest ways to improve your AEO standing.

Schema markup. Structured data in your site's code tells search engines and AI tools precisely what your business is, what you offer, and where you are, in a format they can read and use. Most studio websites don't have it. Most should.

None of this is complicated. But it requires intention. It has to be built in, not added as an afterthought.

The Window Is Open Right Now

Most boutique fitness studios are not thinking about AEO yet. That's the point.

SEO took years to become a priority for most local businesses. By the time the average studio owner understood it, competitors had already built domain authority and review volume that was hard to close the gap on.

AEO is at that same inflection point, but the landscape is moving faster. The studios that build AEO into their presence now will be the ones that show up when someone asks an AI to recommend a studio in their area. The ones that wait will find themselves in the same position they've been in with SEO: starting late.

This is not a trend to watch. It is already the way a growing number of people search.

What to Do Next

If you're not sure whether your website and Google Business Profile are set up for AEO, a digital presence audit is the fastest way to find out.

A Waveform audit reviews your website, your Google Business Profile, your local search performance, and your AEO readiness, and delivers a written report with a clear action plan.
